Praying mantis are some of our most effective beneficial insects. They can capture and eat literally hundreds of insects a day and are effective in controlling both adults and larvae of many damaging insects such as aphids, mealybug, scale, beetles, small caterpillars, and grasshoppers. Praying mantis are harmless to people, animals, and plants.
Praying mantis are sold in egg cases containing 200 to 400 tiny eggs. To release praying mantis, hang the egg case in a protected, shady part of the garden where they will hatch and spread throughout the area. They can be released at any time throughout the warm months of the year.
